Thanks to the five foot wide covered ways that lined the streets, George Town used to be a pleasant, shady, cool place to walk around. Offering protection from both sun and rain, they were the arterial routes of the old town. Sadly the covered porticoes have been colonized for a wide range of uses other than walking! It’s probably impossible now but bringing back the five foot way would encourage the pedestrianisation of George Town and transform the city into a wonderful green haven for walkers.
